Walbridge was awarded the $42 million project, which combined more than 170,000 square feet of new space. It included hangar space, shop and administrative areas, and an air cargo building. The hangar’s clear span exceeds 425 feet and the original steel truss and framing system was designed for a future expansion to accommodate an ultimate clear span of 465 feet.

The Twin Bay 747 Maintenance Hangar was constructed on the site of an existing Delta 737 Hangar, which was demolished as part of this contract prior to the commencement of the new construction.

A unique aspect of the project involved the construction of an underground tunnel for a future roadway expansion. The tunnel needed to be constructed prior to the main hangar facility because a portion of tunnel was located underneath the hangar’s foundation system. This, as well as other site constraints, posed a logistical challenge, which resulted in the project being built in multiple phases.
