DTE Energy hired Walbridge to construct an 8 megawatt gas combined heat and power (CHP) plant at its Mariette, Ohio COGEN facility. The new plant offers an alternative to purchasing electricity from the distribution grid and burning fuel in an on-site furnace or boiler to produce thermal energy.

The natural gas-fired plant has been designed to supply continuous steam and electric power to the Solvay Specialty Polymers Plant, as well as to provide “black start” service in the event of a loss of the electric utility connection. The facility has a peak steam capacity of 150,000 pounds per hour at 305 pounds per square inch gage, and a nominal net electrical capacity of 7,100 KW.

Approximately 3,600 feet of 12-inch pipe was installed, along with 3,600 feet of 6-inch pipe, 250 feet of 14-inch pipe, 400 feet of 8-inch pipe, and 200 feet of 4-inch stainless steel pipe. Mechanical scopes of work met API 1104 and API 650 standards. The scope of work also included installation of a variable speed gas compressor.
