ROCHESTER, MI – Two system designs at the Oakland University Engineering and Computer Science Center were given Awards of Merit by the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Architectural Engineering Institute.

The Mechanical Systems Design and Electrical Systems Design were both named award-winners for the building, which was completed in 2014.

With five stories and 127,000-square-foot, the OUEC, designed by SmithGroupJJR, provides innovative instructional and research facilities for engineering and computer science.

Walbridge, the Construction Manager at Risk, built the student-centered OUEC off of a design for hands-on, team-based learning spaces.

A LEED Gold space, the building houses OU’s school of Engineering and Computer Science, which offers degrees at bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels.

The Architectural Engineering Institute chose the award-winners based on the design and construction of high-performance buildings, including structural, mechanical and electrical systems, as well as construction management and architectural engineering integration. Projects were judged based on: originality and innovative character; integration and collaboration; sustainability; energy efficiency and economics; effective use of technology; and constructability and site logistics.

Out of the 15 different awards and 11 organizations represented, the OUEC was the only one from Michigan.
