DETROIT, MI – The newest graduate residence at the University of Michigan received premier recognition by the Engineering Society of Detroit.

The U-M Munger Graduate Residences was awarded a Construction and Design Award during the ESD’s 42nd Annual Construction and Design Award Competition. The project, which featured more than 700 modular bathrooms constructed 10 miles offsite, was formally awarded during an awards program on Wednesday, June 22 at the Henry Ford Museum.

The 370,000-square-foot building was completed in July 2015 and houses more than 600 students in an apartment-style layout. Use of modularized bathrooms and mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) racks helped save money and time.

Floors one through seven house multi-room apartments with private bathrooms, laundry rooms, multi-purpose dining and living spaces, and full kitchens. The building’s eighth floor provides community spaces for learning, recreational and communal activities, and offers panoramic views of the U-M campus. The building boasts high ceilings, expanded views of the exterior, various meeting and collaboration spaces, a rooftop terrace with a running track, a workout facility, game room and a convenience store.

During the ESD ceremony, the Michigan DNR Outdoor Adventure Center, another project headed by Walbridge, was awarded an Honorable Mention for Building Design and Construction.

Munger Graduate Residences was named a “Build Michigan” award-winner by the Associated General Contractors earlier in 2016.
