Chatting With The New Ambassador: 2019 Employee Meeting Brings Incredible Experience

A packed auditorium heard U.S. Ambassador John Rakolta, Jr. share stories about his time at Walbridge and anticipation for his new role.

Rakolta, the former Chairman and CEO of Walbridge, spoke with WJR’s Paul W. Smith in a “fireside chat” where employees learned about his new role as ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, the process to becoming a U.S. ambassador and some of his many memories during his storied career at Walbridge.

The Walbridge, DFM Solutions and DIG 2019 Employee Meeting was also a chance to come together to talk about the successes of the past 12 months, while looking toward the future and ways to improve on processes.

Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness

Walbridge Project Coordinator Kelsi Stanfield coordinated a breast cancer awareness “Walbridge Day of Pink” for Florida projects in mid-October. She detailed why she led the day, in which project teams were encouraged to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness. October is breast cancer awareness month.

Kelsi Stanfield, on the left holding the sign, led the effort for breast cancer awareness on projects in Florida.

As the daughter of a mother who was diagnosed in 2018 with Terminal Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer, advocacy for Breast Cancer Awareness has become an everyday passion of mine.

Having personally felt the impact with my grandmothers, my mother, friends and family being diagnosed over the years, I know there are so many people around us, unaware of their stories, that are impacted too. I championed this advocacy and awareness campaign throughout our Florida office and job sites with one goal in mind, to flood our sites with pink, raise awareness and create a collaborative and interactive campaign that can involve everyone.

On October 11, with shared encouragement, more than 400 Pink “Walbridge Supports Breast Cancer” Livestrong-type bracelets were passed out among the Florida Group job sites. Embracing, subcontractors, owners, architects, site managers and more, Walbridge teamed together to share the influence of the Power of Pink.

It was amazing to see the personal impact this awareness campaign had on the hardworking individuals that show up to work every day. As we build these amazing structures and place the footprint of our companies across the city, state and nation it is humbling when we get an opportunity to get to know our team a little more.

Opening up this campaign to the site, we learned so much about the men and women that help make these projects happen.

To learn of the friend who was just diagnosed, the wife who one lost, the gentlemen who asked for some extra bracelets for his kids who had lost their mother and so many more stories. It was moving to see how many people participated, made a difference and all who made this Day of Pink worth everything.
