Volvo Powertrain hired Walbridge to upgrade its Mack Truck Hagerstown Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Manufacturing facility. The $72 million, multi-phase program consolidated, renovated, expanded and upgraded systems throughout a significant portion of the 1.57 million-square-foot complex. Walbridge assisted Volvo with many cost-saving methods during the project.

Phase I involved three major components: an engineering development laboratory, office and courtyard area, and a four-story building demolition. Phases II, III and IV included production area renovations and production equipment installation for the crankshaft/camshaft lines for Volvo’s newest engine, as well as a plant-wide upgrade of major utilities.

Several systems throughout the facility were also upgraded during the work. Renovations were brought to the shipping and receiving dock, crankshaft/camshaft machining areas and to the Production Test Cell.
