Walbridge has a strong, solid commitment to supplier diversity. We believe when our suppliers succeed, our company succeeds. That’s why we have a dedicated staff to develop lasting and mutually beneficial partnerships with vendors and subcontractors, many of which are small businesses, minority business enterprises (MBEs), women business enterprises (WBEs) and veteran-owned businesses.
Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs)
Various resources are available for Asian-, black- and American Indian-owned businesses that become certified through the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), including connections to corporate organizations like Walbridge. Each year we set a company-wide goal to make MBEs at least 10 percent of our supplier base. Outreach events help us network with business communities across the country and contribute to us meeting and beating our MBE hiring goal each year. Walbridge has been consistently recognized for its efforts in contracting MBEs and was even named the leading Construction Company of the Year by the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council two years in a row. If you’re not already certified, consider doing so through the NMSDC.
Women Business Enterprises (WBEs)
Even though the construction industry has come a long way in diversifying, we’d be thrilled to have more women on our jobsites. WBEs not only benefit in helping us attain this goal, but certification with the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WEBNC) presents member companies with a variety of professional resources. We are constantly looking for new ways to source WBEs and target women enterprises to make up at least 4 percent of our annual supplier business. Become certified through the WEBNC and take advantage of a variety of ways to work with us.
One way we can pay back our veterans is by providing them with avenues for success in the construction industry. As a member of associations like the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), we’re able to tap a large database of qualified military vendors and subcontracts. Each year we attend numerous small business conferences in search of veteran-owned enterprises and host regional outreach events across the country to help meet an annual 5 percent veteran-owned business contracting goal. Visit the U.S. Small Business Administration to learn more about certification.
Walbridge has been recognized on numerous occasions for its continued commitment to supplier diversity. In 2011, the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council (MMSDC) named Walbridge as its Corporation of the Year in Construction. In 2009, Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America named Walbridge the first construction company to receive its MBE Development Award. Walbridge has been selected annually to receive the MMSDC Corporate ONE Award for the past 13 years.
“When opportunities are expanded for minority-owned and women-owned businesses, our company benefits and our communities are enhanced,” said John Rakolta, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Walbridge. “We remain committed to helping these businesses advance, thrive and succeed.”Walbridge In-house Supplier Diversity TradeFairs:
Frequently we invite suppliers and subcontractors to attend our quarterly In-house Diversity TradeFair, where they’re given the opportunity to showcase their services and products to our team of estimators. The diversity tradeshows are hosted at our headquarters in downtown Detroit. Sign up to be considered for the next one.
